SANDWICHES

It is reported that the sandwich was invented by the Earl of Sandwich when he took meat and put it between two slices of bread.

But the actual history of sandwiches goes back to  the famous Rabbi, Hillel the Elder, who lived during the 1st century B.C.

A poor man, but a great scholar, he began the Passover custom of sandwiching a mixture of chopped nuts, apples, spices, and wine between two matzohs to eat with bitter herbs. This sandwich is the foundation of the Seder and is named after him. But matzoh, being unleavened bread, is not absorptive of sauces and juices as today's sandwich has become.

The sandwich was introduced to the United States in 1840.

Today, no matter what part of the world you are in, you will find sandwiches, which may have different names, but may be the same as ones we have have at home, as well as having sandwiches unique to their country.

Even is different parts of the US, we have different names for the same sandwiches, ie:  Subs, hero, hoggie, grinders and po'boys.

In our sandwich section, you will find a great selection for you to try and enjoy.
